50 Coolest Song Parts

Why don't we just hang it up and start a music blog, because that's all I've been blogging these days. Via The Morning News (now with 15% more Kevin Fanning!), this list of the 50 coolest song parts is great fun, some of the songs complete with clips. Heavy on punk and classic rock, the list captures some of the most memorable moments in some otherwise not-so-memorable songs.

Favorites?

WHat works for Phil Collins doesn't seem to carry through for so many of the rest of the songs. I mean, I love the drums kickin' in at the end of "In The Air Tonight" as much as I hate the rest of that song...but please, "Purple Haze" should never be abbreviated in any form. Listening to all the other clips made me feel the same-not happy that someone censored the song for me-but longing to hear the rest of the song.

Thanks for making me waste another hour of bar-study time. You know my love of hierarchies in all things. The problem with this hierarchy, though, is that the coolness of the various song-parts featured are not hierarchical at all. Phil Collins #1? Please.

I too love the hierarchy (but also understand that this is prboably why Toby doesn't "get" this exercise). I kind of understand where they're coming from with Phil Collins, though. It's about the ratio of coolness of song part to relative coolness of song. If you're trying to isolate the coolness of the song PART, it stands to reason that you'd pick the song with the greatest coolness disparity between part and whole. You're thinking too big picture!

I disagree. This is not a hierarchy of song parts that are distinctly cool, or cool relative to the rest of the song. The coolness of the song part must stand on its own merits, relative only to cool parts of other songs, not to uncool parts of the same song. If you were correct, the hierarchy would be labelled as "50 most unexpectedly cool parts of songs" or "50 cool parts of songs that otherwise suck." Instead, the hierarchy is simply labelled as the "50 coolest song parts", nothing more, and nothing less. QED.

I'm not saying it's exclusively bad songs with cooler parts, but that may be why some things, like the Phil Collins song, seem bumped up near the top of the list. Your comment about "Phil Collins?" makes me think you're tainted by the song itself, rather than the part.

Anyway, some of these are lame, anyway. We should make our own list ;).
