3-D Thursdays
Film Forum is following the sold-out success of their January run of Hitchcock's "Dial M for Murder" with a month of stereoscopic mania every Thursday -- beginning tonight with Raoul Walsh's "Gun Fury" (and the Three Stooges' "Pardon My Backfire").
Where Hitchcock's use of 3-D was subtle, unexpected, and domestic, my guess is that "Gun Fury" will leave people needing neckbraces from all the surprise action bursting from the screen. Adventure, violence, and swagger are the order of the night. But Walsh has a soft touch and amazing sensitivity, too. He's been called the only director who could get away with filming James Cagney sitting on his mother's lap (in "White Heat").

If hardwares sold a house paint called Gusto [ed. - Don't they?], the number one customer would be Walsh: six decades in film using a jabbing, forthright crispness to occasionally vitalize the crudest hack fiction.
"Gun Fury" stars Rock Hudson as a fatigued soldier coming home from the Civil War, sick of violence. But when an ex-Confederate steals his fiance (Donna Reed), Hudson's raw masculine taste for blood comes back as he searches for his girl and the Rebel who took her. I don't think I need to say how this one turns out. The fun will be the variety of tomahawks and punches coming out at the audience in beautiful stereoscopic Technicolor.

A bigger group of nerds than the Stereoscopic Society I have yet to see!
Ok. NERD ALERT! I'm going to try to get through this comment without using the words "focal plane," but let's face it -- looking at the collection of bearded old nerds laughing about one-eyed John Ford making a stereoscopic movie (Jen's joke: "How Green and Red Was My Valley") felt a little like looking at the into a futuristic mirror. But anyways.
It turns out that westerns are peculiarly good in 3D. The way the technology pulls whatever is in focus out of its environment works well with an entire genre that's based on the rugged individual making his way in a cruel and unsympathetic terrain. The effect of 3D is to draw the cowboy out of the desert and make him look even more alone, solitary, and individualistic.
Walsh played with this a lot, because whatever's on the same focal plane (darn!) stands out equally in 3D, and so when men would aign themselves, they'd do it standing parallel. When there was a rift and it was mano-a-mano, the characters would be in different focus, and much more distinct from each other. It was really kind of neat.
The last 3-D film I saw was Flesh for Frankenstein on Halloween back in 1997 or '98. What impressed me so much more than the kidney-on-a-spear and other miscellaneous viscera, was the sense of depth to the landscape shots: the countryside really did seem to extend back behind the screen. While everyone else was waving their hands in front of their faces at the pop-out images, I felt like walking down to the screen and into the hills.
As much fun as FfF is, I think I prefer Blood for Dracula. Udo's great in both, though.
