Dad's First Rock Concert

10:30 p.m., interior of smallish Manhattan living room. H.J. sits in an overstuffed, claw-shredded but comfortable chair, reading from The Secret Lives of Presidents, a dishy expose of Presidential tics and peccadillos.

Jen sits on the couch, reading (and intermittently giggling at) Thank You, Jeeves.

The phone rings. Jen hops up to answer it.

Jen: Hello?

(An older man's voice, shouting over intense yet indeterminate background noise.)

Voice: Jennifer!

Jen: Dad?

(Loud music, but not much else, is audible.)

Dad: (Still shouting.) Guess where I am? (Sounds of music and general commotion garble his voice.) Oh, shoot. I'll have to call you back!

Jen hangs up the phone, puzzled. She waits.

The phone rings again.

Jen: Dad?

Dad: You're not going to believe this. I just went to a rock concert!

Jen: Where are you?

Dad: I'm at a human resources professional conference in Atlanta.

Jen: (Bemused, trying to reconcile "rock concert" and "human resources professional conference.") Oh... okay. What was the concert?

Dad: The Doobie Brothers! Are you familiar with their music?

Jen: (Slightly uncomfortable.) Um... yeah. I know some of their songs.

Dad: Well, I'd never heard them before, but it was great. Very powerful!

Jen: (Again, trying to reconcile two seemingly irreconcilable concepts: "powerful" and "Doobie Brothers.") That's... great! Is, uh, Pam there? (Struggling, attempting to envision father AND stepmother at concert.)

Dad: No, she had nanny duty. Wow! I know you've been to lots of rock concerts, but this was my first, if you don't count Neil Diamond, with your mother. And I met this nice lady, who even got me to dance!

Jen: (Still uncomfortable but now deeply amused, trying to memorize every line to recount to H.J. and Mom.) You danced?

Dad:(Chuckling, demonstrably pleased with self and H.R. professional conference.) Yeah! Wow, that really was great. The Doobie Brothers! You said you've heard their music?

Jen: (Distracted, wondering the extent of her ex-minister father's comprehension of the word "doobie.") Yeah...

Dad: Well, I've gotta go now. Just thought you'd get a kick out of it. Your dad, at a rock concert! Bye!

Jen: Take care, Dad!

"Black Water" begins its endless loop in Jen's head.
