Little Time for Blogging Today

...and since I've been holding down the fort while H.J. is launching a new product at his day job (someday we'll all be able to see streaming trial footage on our cell phones, should we -- you know -- actually want to), you'll get little from us today.

In the meantime, check out Beck Lyric or Spam Text, TMFTML's bizarre but inspired Clinton/Faulkner pairing, Fred Kaplan's Slate article on bringing back the draft (or not), or perhaps help me out with some entries for Bawdy Limerick Mad Libs (How's that for a full spectrum of options?)

Kaplan has reached the right conclusion for the wrong reason. His has created a smoke screen for the real issue by framing the draft argument as the choice between having competent soldiers or having soldiers who aren�t all from poor neighborhoods. His conclusion is "[Waging war] is too vital to tolerate such a sacrifice for the cause of social justice." Then he sums up by saying �The inescapable answer [to the problem of too few troops] is that we have to pay more for them�.

This whole argument is a smoke screen that avoids the point that the draft is to be avoided because war is to be avoided. First of all, history has proven that the rich are much better able to avoid a draft than the poor. So his point is moot. Second of all, it�s obvious that volunteer soldiers fight better than draftees, but that does not mean that war mongering is more important than social justice. That also does not mean that the �inescapable answer� is to increase military spending.

War does not promote social justice. It promotes war-torn nations and dead soldiers. Even if drafted soldiers were proportionately rich and poor, and were motivated fighters, a government that forces it�s citizens to fight for the narrow economic motives of it�s richest citizens is antithetical to social justice.

The real answer to our troop shortage is to reduce the need for troops by practicing more diplomacy with our enemies, sharing the burdens and economic advantages of war with our allies, to stop supporting dictatorships, and to stop promoting economic injustice.

Do you really believe that all wars are fought solely for the economic interests of the rich? You talk about reducing the need for troops, so I assume you believe we need troops. Is this just to defend us from other country's profit motives? What would those needs be, and are those needs incompatible with the draft?
