Karl Rove forgot to include Bush in the memo. John Kerry was supposed to be the flip-flopper, not the President. But of course the Flip-Flopper-in-Chief has yet again said one thing and then its opposite. Maybe George just forgot what he believed. In a softball interview with "Today Show" host Matt Lauer, Bush said that "I don't think you can win the war on terror." The incredible thing about the statement isn't the substance of it, but rather the idea that Bush might be admitting his mistakes. Taken a week after he admitted to making a "miscalculation" about the war...
I was more than a little outraged at the political pageant of two 9/11 widows and a brother who lost his family member to terrorists telling their emotional stories on a GOP stage. It's indecent, disrespectful, and totally effective. Of course we all know the GOP is in New York to capitalize on September 11, 2001. But the wonderful thing about our nation's response to that tragedy was its bipartisan unity. It didn't matter what political party, race, color, religion, even nationality, you were. In the months after 9/11 the country seemed to forget differences and ban together in a...
Here's a poll about the attitudes of undecided voters, which this article numbers at 2.6 million. They don't like NASCAR; just 12.9 percent are fans. They get their TV news from Fox, 40.4 percent, followed by CNN, 14.7 percent, and MSNBC, 13.3 percent. They drive domestic cars over foreign by 57.9 percent to 36.9 percent. They are split evenly between George Washington and Abraham Lincoln as to who was the greatest president....
I'm a Liberal - Why didn't I march against the GOP?
I listened to helicopter circling above my apartment all yesterday. I felt the powerful gaze of police officers watching me as I walked to the grocery store. I heard faint bullhorns and the sounds of a large gathering mere blocks away from my home. It could have been so easy, and so fun, for me to hop over and join in the big anti-Bush protest that coiled around Madison Square Garden in Manhattan yesterday. But I'm not interested in the crowds. I'm interested in a leader. The GOP convention plans to focus on the leadership qualities of George W. Bush....
Ben Barnes, the former Lieutenant Governor of Texas, has finally spoken out about the free pass he gave a young George W. Bush. He says he's "ashamed" that he got Bush and other rich Texas sons into the Guard so they could avoid serving in Vietnam. Barnes was Speaker of the House in Texas when Bush joined the guard in 1968....
I've always had some weird fascination with celebrity birthdays, possibly out of a desire to see how long someone can work successfully within the movie-making world. Roman Polanski, who turns 71 today is proof that one can turn out masterpieces at both ends of a career, from his 1962 feature debut Knife in the Water to 2002's The Pianist. Polanski is currently working on an adaptation of Oliver Twist, with newcomer Barney Clark in the title role and Ben Kingsley as Fagin. Two of the last Polanski dvd hold outs are due this fall: 1967's The Fearless Vampire Killers...
Now that theater owners will have had a little time to squeegy the collective fan-boy wad off of the screens showing Alien Vs. Predator, let's take a look at a few flicks down the pike, ones with hopefully a little something more to offer: I (Heart) Huckabees (October 1) is the first film from David O. Russell since 1999's Three Kings (which will apparently be re-released this fall). A comedy about, well....I'll actually let the official Fox Searchlight synopsis handle this one: "Albert Markovski (Jason Schwartzman), head of the Open Spaces Coalition, has been experiencing an alarming series of coincidences...

Rick James died today. (Please refrain from making any Dave Chappelle jokes for a full 48 hours, bi...) Best quote from the article: "Today the world mourns a musician and performer of the funkiest kind..."...
Dear Tobias, I trust you're doing well. I wanted to write a note to tell you how excited I am about my recent trip to Florida. I got a sexy purple sunburn on the Southwest Florida's many beaches. I ate from the delicious chain restaurants dotting the lush tropical landscape. I watched an overalls-clad female screech in horror at the condition of a port-a-potty. I enthusiastically scratched mosquito bites I received while airboating through the Everglades. However, here's the most exciting part. I know you study reptiles and amphibians, so I trust you'll be pleased to note that I have...
A group of scientists at King's College, London, has come up with a mathematical formula to determine how scary a movie is. By taking into account such variables as music, the unknown, setting, and a balance between realism and fantasy, the researchers have determined that Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is the perfect scary movie. They get no argument from me (The Shining never fails to scare the hell out of me and ranks as one of the director's very best works, in my opinion), though the idea of determining a film's (or any piece of art's) worth via a...
